Monument of the Four Kings

Of the many monuments to be found in Veliko Tarnovo the most prominent has to be the Monument to Assens, which is better known as 'The Four Horsemen' or 'Four Kings'.

The monument is located on a hill in the Boruna area above a bend of the Yantra River, and can be reached via the Stambolov Bridge. It was built in 1985 in honor of the 800th anniversary of the uprising of Assen and Peter.

It depicts four of the greatest kings of Bulgaria - Assen, Peter, Kaloyan and Ivan Assen II. The sword raised to the sky in the middle of the monument symbolizes the power and rise of Medieval Bulgaria.

The impressive and imposing sculpture occupies the hill with the Boris Denev Art Gallery and is the backdrop for some spectacular fireworks and laser shows.
